Condition Grading Guide

Every piece we sell is graded by hand to the standard below. When a copy has a specific flaw, such as a name written on the cover or a scorecard filled in, we say so in the listing, whatever the grade.

Near Mint

Looks nearly new. Sharp corners, tight square spine, bright cover with full gloss where applicable. No writing, tears, stains, or missing pages. Light handling wear at most.

Excellent

Clean and attractive with light wear. Slight corner softening or minor spine stress. Cover bright. No tears, no writing on the cover, all pages present.

Very Good

A nice, honest collector copy. Visible wear: rounded corners, spine creasing, light soiling or small edge tears. May have a completed scorecard or light writing inside, noted in the listing. Complete.

Good

Well read and well loved. Heavy wear, creases, larger edge tears, writing, or staining. Staples may be rusted. Complete unless noted.

Fair

Significant problems: missing cover pieces, heavy staining, tape, or missing pages, all described. A placeholder copy for a run, or the only copy of a scarce piece.

Things we always note

  • Scorecards filled in, and whether in pencil or ink
  • Names, stamps, or writing anywhere
  • Missing pages, inserts, or coupons
  • Tape, water damage, mildew, or odor
  • Reprints and later printings

Graded by a third party?

When a piece has been professionally graded and slabbed, we list the grading service and grade in the title and keep it in its holder.
